For the past several days, we ISM students have been working incredibly hard to put together our Original Work projects, which demonstrate a piece of what we have learned this year. I had the opportunity to produce a song, which, while very strenuous, was an amazing experience and very informative. I had a lot of fun being creative and attempting to express emotions through the song, which it turns out is very difficult! While I do not believe that the final product was anything especially significant, I found that what I learned throughout the experience was far more important than what the final product actually came out to be. Analyzing songs, recording different instruments, using software and mixing and mastering are all very demanding tasks, and the process of creating the song itself combines all of these elements. In creating a song, trial and error is basically all you are doing: does this bass note work with this chord? does this drum kit accentuate the bass line? By its very nature, music production forces producers to learn quickly; Their decisions have immediate changes to a song, and if they don't like it, a change needs to be made. I learned a great deal about operating different kinds of software, creating tracks that work together and using digital techniques to make the song sound the way you want it to. I cannot wait for my future endeavors.
